Counselor In Training Program
From Camper to Counselor
The Windridge CIT program is the natural next chapter for campers who have grown up at Windridge and are ready to give back to the community that shaped them. Designed for 16-year-olds entering their junior year of high school, the program bridges the gap between being a camper and becoming a counselor — building the leadership, coaching, and life skills that make a great Windridge staff member.
What makes our CIT program unique is the dual focus it requires. Because Windridge is a sports-specialty camp within the framework of a traditional residential camp, our counselors need to excel in two distinct areas: sports coaching and residential camp life. The CIT program is designed to develop both — while making sure CITs still get to enjoy being at camp themselves.
What CITs Do
CITs are an integral part of the Windridge community. Each day includes dedicated time for counselor training, instructor development in a chosen sport, and regular camper programming — because being a great counselor starts with remembering what it feels like to be a great camper.
CIT Schedule
The daily schedule includes eight periods:
- Two periods as a regular camper participating in camp programming
- Two periods of training in a major sport program as an instructor
- Two elective periods
- One period of CIT group training with the CIT Director
- One period of free time
CITs meet daily as a group with the CIT Director, covering topics including camper care, residential life, programming, evening activities, health and safety, and leadership skills.
CIT responsibilities:
- Living in a cabin with campers under the guidance of a mentor counselor
- Selecting at least one sport major to train in as an instructor
- Participating in a camp community service activity
- Assisting in operating the camp store
- Supporting evening activities and special events
- Planning, setting up, and decorating the camper banquet
Requirements
The CIT program is selective. We're looking for former Windridge campers who are genuinely ready to step into a leadership role. To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be 16 years of age and entering their junior year of high school (or equivalent) the coming summer
- Be a previous Windridge camper
- Demonstrate maturity, trustworthiness, responsibility, and a desire to lead
- Be willing to abide by all camp rules and regulations
- Attend at least one session — though we strongly encourage two if at all possible
How to Apply
Applying to the CIT program involves a few steps — and we take each one seriously:
- Read through all program materials carefully
- Confirm you are ready and willing to accept the responsibilities of a CIT
- Complete the CIT Application
- Write a one-page essay explaining why you'd like to be a CIT
- Submit one letter of reference
- Parents, complete the standard Camper Application and select the CIT session for your child
Once your application is reviewed and you are accepted into the program, you will receive a CIT agreement to be signed by both you and your parent or guardian and returned to us.
Cost
The CIT program is offered at half the standard camp tuition for each session attended — making it an incredible value for a summer of growth, leadership training, and unforgettable experiences.
